The Civic Hospital and the Central Experimental Farm

Explore the Civic Hospital area and the adjoining north-western edge of the Central Experimental Farm. Points of interest include the site of the very first movie projection in Canada in 1896 at West End Park, the inspiring story of Fisher's folly (as the Civic Hospital was dubbed by the press when it opened its doors in 1924), and historic Field #1 on the Central Experimental Farm, the second-longest continuously operated agricultural research plot in the world.

This walk will provide context and appreciation for the history, landscape, and architecture of the Civic Hospital area. Along with a better understanding of our city, this will broaden our perspective of the controversy over the selection of a site for a new campus for the Civic Hospital.

Trajet

We'll meet at Fisher Park Community Centre, 250 Holland Ave., just north of the 417, and head south across the pedestrian overpass at Harmer Avenue, walk up to Ruskin, Island Park Drive, across Carling, and along the Driveway to Ash Lane. From there, we will go back across Carling to the grounds of the Civic Hospital, down Hinton to Sherwood Drive, over to Holland and back to Fisher Park.

Paul Johanis grew up in Hintonburg many years ago and considers this area his backyard. Now retired, Paul is active with the Greenspace Alliance of Canada's Capital and the Coalition to Protect the Farm.
