Doing a Walkability Audit

We will walk along Rideau St and adjacent streets to examine examples of good and bad features related to "walkability." We will compare and contrast Rideau and York Sts with respect to walkability, and we'll consider whether and how pedestrian shortcuts might contribute to traffic calming plans.

We will also review methods used by Walk Ottawa, the Council on Aging, and Ecology Ottawa to gather input on pedestrian needs and experience. As a participant, you will learn about how to get City action on pedestrian deficiencies and how to organize a walkability audit process for your neighbourhood.

Trajet

We'll meet in front of the Rideau Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (377 Rideau St., on the north side just east of Loblaws (Nelson St.)). From there, we will proceed west on Rideau to the William Street Mall, then through the Market to York St, east on York back to the east side of King Edward Ave. to Beausoleil. After that, we will turn at north on Chapel to walk the walking path to Old St. Patrick St. and then come back south along the other pedestrian path to Beausoleil and then back to Rideau.

Participants are invited to attend the annual general meeting of Walk Ottawa immediately following the walk in the basement meeting room at the OPL Rideau branch.

Chris and John residents of Sandy Hill near Rideau St. and both are board members of Walk Ottawa. Chris is also a cyclist and former Vrtucar co-owner. John is a wheelchair user.
