West-end LRT Stations

Ottawa's Western Light Rail Stations

A tour of the five western Light Rail stations, from Tunney's to Parliament, showing their design, facilities, accessibility, interconnection with surface transit, integration into existing and new buildings, artwork, and most important, how they connect to major downtown destinations. The tour includes about 100 to 200 metres of walking at each station, with a visit to the surface (no mandatory stairs), and four one-minute train rides between the stations.


Almost all vertical travel will be by large-capacity elevators. Escalators will be used in two places but an alternative route by elevator will be offered. Platform access will be by choice of stairs or elevator.


Participants must buy a single fare, (cash, credit, debit, or Presto), good for 105 minutes, or have a transit pass or day pass.

The group will meet in the concourse of Tunneys Station at Scott St. and Holland Ave. We will visit the following stations moving eastward, coming out of all stations and re-entering for he next train ride (except at Parliament station):

  • Tunneys Station: view the concourse, the bus terminal area and both ends of the station at the platform level
  • Bayview Station: view the upper-level platforms, lower level concourse, and Trillium Line station.
  • Pimisi Station: walk the length of the station from the east entrance, then board the train
  • Lyon Station: we will come out of the station and walk from the west to the east entrance
  • Parliament Station: walk from the west entrance to the Sparks Street Mall and back to the east entrance
  • Rideau Station: not on the tour due to a weekend closure, but will be described, including Ottawa's longest escalator


The tour ends inside at Parliament station, so participants can use the LRT to return to the start.

David has been involved in public transport advocacy with Transport Action (formerly Transport 2000) for over 45 years, including 12 years as national president. He served as a team member on the original 2001 light rail pilot project (i.e, the original north-south O-Train line), and has been an agency consultation group member for most of Ottawa's LRT-related studies since then.
