Beautiful McCarthy Meadows and Hunt Club Creek

Join us to discover the natural beauty of the Hunt Club Woods area in Ottawa. We’ll explore a local pollinator patch, Hunt Club Creek, and McCarthy Meadows. The McCarthy Woods and Meadows and the Southern Corridor is Ottawa’s largest urban greenspace and the backbone of the Hunt Club Community. The western part of the McCarthy Meadows is a “hidden gem” that we are proud to share with others in Ottawa.

This precious greenspace is home to birds and other wildlife, including woodpeckers, chickadees, deer, foxes, coyotes, chipmunks, squirrels, and many others. We hope to get the chance to see and hear some of these creatures as they go about their daily routines. (A couple of does [female deer] have recently been spotted in the Meadows.)

The meadows are also home to over two hundred species of native plants, bushes, and trees, which will be stretching their green shoots toward the sun or even blooming. In addition to their own beauty, they provide habitat to the area's pollinators, birds, and wildlife. We'll discuss the importance of native plants and pollinators to the health of wild spaces, and if we’re lucky, we may find that the apple trees in a former orchard, which are a crucial source of nourishment for pollinators, are also in bloom.

We'll meet up and begin our tour at the 'island' in the Cul de Sac of Archer Square, across from 11 Archer Sq. (Archer Square runs north off Uplands Drive a few blocks east of Riverside Drive.)

We'll start by admiring the Archer Island Pollinator Patch while we wait for everyone to join us. After that, we’ll make our way toward the pathway along Hunt Club Creek. We’ll check out the City’s Hunt Club Creek sign, before following this lovely part of the Poet’s Pathway toward the closest entrance to McCarthy Meadows. Once in McCarthy Woods we’ll walk in a 1 km loop around Meadows, keeping our eyes and ears open for interesting plants, birds, wildlife or other interesting things to discuss and discover.

Accessibility: Most of the tour is on uneven, unpaved terrain in McCarthy Meadows. The pathway along Hunt Club Creek, although technically paved, is also uneven and steep in places making it challenging to navigate for strollers, wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
