If you're new to Jane's Walk Ottawa-Gatineau (and even if you're not), you may find this summary of features helpful.

If you are new to Jane's Walk, please note:

  • the walks are free to attend
  • the walks take place rain or shine.
  • if a walk has a limit to participants, you will need to sign-up to attend. See instructions below.
  • volunteer organized, volunteer led: walk leaders and everyone that is helping run Jane's Walk Ottawa-Gatineau is a volunteer

Navigating the schedule:

1. Viewing the list of Walks: Click on Schedule in the Walks menu. The list of walks starts below the intro at the top. Depending on your screen size, you may need to scroll down to see it..

  • To work better with small screen devices, the list of walks are given in pages of ten. Click on the successive page numbers to see the full list of walks.

2. Viewing a walk description: Click on the walk title to open the walk page.

  • Each walk page has a detailed description presented in a standard format, beginning with the title, the text description, and a photo.
  • A box on the right (for small displays, it may appear below the description text and photo) gives a summary of the logistics of the walk (who, when, where)
  • Below that are a map showing the location of the starting point, route details, a short bio of the walk leader(s), and a photo gallery. These may be in a slightly different order on mobile devices.

3. Sorting walks: The walk titles in the schedule are listed in order of day and time. You can sort the walks by language, day, and area of town by selecting the settings you want from the boxes above the list.

4. Using the interactive map. The map at the top of the schedule page shows pins at the starting points of all the walks. The map is interactive: you can zoom in or out, and move the map by dragging. Putting your pointer on a map pin will show a pop-up of the walk title. Clicking on a pointer will open the corresponding walk page.

5. Signing up for a walk. Some walks have a limit on the group size. You will need to sign up for these walks to reserve a space. There are other walks that ask for sign-up so we can get an idea of how many will attend, but you do not need to sign up to attend.

Once sign-up opens, there will be a button on each walk page. Click on the button to sign up. You will be able to sign up for from one to four attendees. You will need to enter your email address to sign up. We will confirm your place, or if the walk is full, we will add your request to the waiting list. If you sign up more than a few days in advance you will receive a reminder a day or two before the walk. If you cannot attend a walk you signed up for, you may be asked to cancel so that someone on the waiting list can be given a place.

6. What if a walk changes? Once the schedule is confirmed and sign-up has started, we won't change start times or starting places unless it is necessary, and will clearly flag in the title of the walk that a change has been made. If you have signed up, we will send an email to note the change. If by some chance we need to cancel a walk, it will be indicated in the walk title. The main reason for cancelling a walk is that the walk route is close to one of the rivers and there is no meaningful way to modify the route.

7. Walks will take place rain or shine!  Check the weather report and dress accordingly. If the weather is heavy, walk leaders may decide to take shelter in a coffee shop or pub for a lively discussion in place of the walk.

8. A portable schedule. We will try to publish a 'timeline' schedule with a graphic depiction of the starting times and time duration of each walk. If available, this will be posted for download in a pdf format a few days before the festival weekend. A link to the file will be added to the intro to the schedule.
