We will tour six gardens in the Kilborn Allotment Gardens, each hosted by the individual gardener. Gardeners will talk about techniques they use for establishing growing beds, rotating crops, companion planting, managing pests, irrigation, working with the biodiversity of the allotments, seed saving, preservation of crops, and of course, cooking! Our gardener hosts are committed to encouraging food gardening anywhere and everywhere throughout Ottawa, so bring your questions!


The route is on unpaved, uneven ground. It should be okay for strollers but it would be difficult with a walker or wheelchair. There is a paved bike path through the allotments. It is possible to view the allotments from the bike path; however, it is not always close to the allotment of interest.

The allotments can still be damp this time of year so be prepared for wet ground.

Meet near the sheds at the Pleasant Park end of the Kilborn Allotment Gardens (Pleasant Park Rd, east of Dorval Ave.).

We will follow a one-kilometre loop through the allotments, visiting each garden host at their allotment.


There is a parking lot at the entrance to the allotment area.

About the walk leader

Janet Mark Wallace has been a community garden advocate in Ottawa for twenty-five years. She has held an allotment at the Kilborn Allotment Gardens since 2010. Over the years, Janet has had the opportunity to learn from many of the two hundred and twenty-five allotment gardeners in the KAG, who hail from every continent on the globe. During the pandemic, the allotments took on a whole new importance as more and more neighbourhood people discovered the beauty, calm, and biodiversity of this space.

In 2021, Janet helped establish a Local Food Committee of the Alta Vista Community Association, dedicated to supporting the growing of food in Ward 18. The AVCALFC will be jointly hosting the Jane's Walk.
