Kilborn Allotment Gardens

The Kilborn Allotment Gardens are Ottawa's largest community gardens, with over 400 plots. They are flanked to the west by a paved path created in 2011, which allows a constant flow of passers-by to discover the gardens. Gardeners come from all over the world, creating a multicultural dynamic of cuisine and horticulture. The Jardiniers Kilborn Gardeners have worked with city staff in recent years to increase cooperation between gardeners, for example, by maintaining the communal compost piles and operating an equipment exchange depot that allows gardeners to share surplus equipment and plants with one another, and indeed with anyone who passes by. The gardens are a true urban oasis, hosting wildlife and pollinator plants as well as agricultural endeavours.

Four or five gardeners will host us in their garden and tell us the specifics of how they produce food.

Location
Route

We'll meet near the sheds in the parking lot of the Kilborn Allotment Gardens on the south side of Pleasant Park Road west of Haig Dr. (near Dorval Ave & Pleasant Park Rd).

The walk will take us on a circle tour of approximately one kilometre through the allotments.

The terrain is uneven and likely to be muddy at the beginning of May. Waterproof footwear is recommended.

Those with strollers or mobility aids may not be able to follow the route exactly, but might follow an approximation of the tour along the paved bike path.

The walk is accessible from bus routes 48 and 49.

The north-south bike path that runs from Conroy & Walkley through to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus passes the allotments between Kilborn and Pleasant Park.

About the walk leader

Janet is a founding member of the Jardiniers Kilborn Gardeners, formed in 2022 to advocate for community food production within the Kilborn Allotment Gardens. We have since expanded to hosting Ottawa's annual Seedy Saturday event each year on the first Saturday in March. Through monthly meetings open to all gardeners, combined with potlucks, tours, and workshops, we aim to share allotment garden expertise throughout the Ottawa Gardening Community. Our annual Jane's Walk brings gardeners from across the city and allows us to connect and network with similar initiatives in other parts of the city.
