Ottawa in Verse

Ottawa has featured in fiction and poetry since long before it became the political capital and city of neighbourhoods we know today. This walk will focus in on poetry: join us to explore downtown Ottawa through the eyes of contemporary poets who reflect on the places and people and life in our city.

Location
Route

We'll meet at the National Gallery of Canada in front of the Maman spider sculpture in the plaza on the south side of the Gallery.

From there, we'll walk over to view the Alexandra Bridge (we won't be crossing it), walk through part of Major's Hill Park, around the Chateau Laurier, Confederation Square and the War Memorial, Sparks Steet, up to Parliament Hill, and across Wellington to finish up at Library and Archives Canada where the Ottawa International Writers Festival is taking place.

Accessibility: There are some inclines around the National Gallery, Major's Hill Park, and the Chateau Laurier, and again up Wellington from the Chateau Laurier toward Parliament Hill. If you have special accessibility needs or preferences, please drop Susan a line in advance.

About the walk leader
Hello! I’m Susan. I’m passionate about using radio, storytelling, and walking to help people deepen their relationship with Ottawa. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing hundreds of writers and poets (and artists) of all kinds on CKCU FM, where I’ve hosted a morning show since 1999. In 2014, I co-founded Ottawa (de)tours, a social enterprise with a mandate to help people explore and discuss contemporary issues, which operated for six seasons, and I still love a great walk.
