Coronation Park Tree Walk

Join tree expert Owen Clarkin on a walk through Coronation Park to learn all about trees! Owen will be guiding us on an educational walk through a lovely woodlot in Coronation Park to share his passion and knowledge on tree identification, native tree species, the benefits of trees, current threats to tree health, and more. The Coronation Park forest has a lovely diversity of observed species including elm, maple, hickory, oak, and more.

The walk is co-hosted by CAFES Ottawa and the Riverview Park Community Association. The walk is part of CAFES's annual community tree initiative that aims to increase public education and awareness on the importance of trees and greenspace in Ottawa's urban landscapes. Trees not only provide essential ecological services such as climate mitigation, stormwater management, and biodiversity enhancement, but contribute significantly to human health and wellness and are a critical component of equitable, livable cities.

Whether you want to learn more about trees, are yourself a tree expert, or just want to get outside and spend some much needed time in nature — we can't wait to see you all there! Bring your family, kids, friends — everyone is welcome.

After the walk, we will be doing a tree planting to demonstrate best practices for tree planting, watering, care, and maintenance. Stick around to learn how to care for newly planted trees!

Location
Route

Meet us at 9:30 am at the intersection of Crestwood Place, Penhill Avenue, and Pixley Private. We'll be taking a leisurely hike, mainly within the small wooded area in Coronation Park, as well as walking on one or two streets within a block of the starting location, about a 1 km distance. We will never be far from the starting/ending point.

There are some dirt trails through the woodlot that can be muddy in the spring; that may be difficult for some. We recommend dressing for the weather and wearing waterproof footwear.
